Late Adv. Poonthura Soman Gurukkal, was a revered martial arts master, legal professional, and visionary leader in the world of Kalaripayattu, India’s oldest martial tradition. As the 1st Secretary General of the Indian Kalaripayattu Federation (IKF), he played a pivotal role in promoting and standardizing the ancient art across India and beyond. A passionate proponent of traditional knowledge systems, he founded the West Bengal Kalaripayattu Association, bringing authentic training and recognition to the region. His efforts helped bridge ancient wisdom with modern platforms, earning Kalaripayattu its rightful place in state and national-level competitions. Soman Gurukkal was deeply committed to both the physical discipline and healing science of Kalaripayattu. His legacy lives on through the practitioners, instructors, and institutions he inspired across India.
The mission of the Kalaripayattu Association of Bengal (KAB) is to preserve, promote, and propagate the ancient martial art of Kalaripayattu in its authentic form across West Bengal. We aim to create a strong foundation for physical, mental, and spiritual development through disciplined training, cultural education, and community engagement.
